FIFA World Cup 1986 Group C
Canada made their first appearance but had their work cut out in a tough group that included France, the European Champions. Hungary's heavy defeat at the hands of the Soviet team emphasised just how far Hungarian football had declined since the 1950s.

Papin scored France's winner in the 78th minute, heading home from point blank range after the Canadian defence failed to deal with a high, looping cross.

Two goals in the opening four minutes put the Soviets in the driving seat. Belanov added a penalty in the 24th minute. Three more were scored in the second period to complete a miserable afternoon for Hungary.

Victory against Canada was small compensation for Hungarian supporters after the humiliation of their opening game but it did at least keep hopes of progressing alive This would, however, need a famous victory in their final match.
