Altobelli again opened the scoring for Italy, prodding home at the far post while his colleagues were appealing for a penalty for an earlier foul. Italy missed a penalty in the first half and could have been made to pay after Choi Soon-Ho crashed home the equaliser from 20 yards with just over an hour played but Altobelli scored again to put Italy back in the lead. With eight minutes to go Cho Kwang-Rae put through his own goal trying to prevent the ball reaching de Napoli on the edge of the six yard box but a minute later Huh Jung-Moo scored to set up a stirring finish. The win ensured that Italy qualified in second place for the knock out stage.

A goal by Valdano in the third minute and a second eleven minutes from time were enough for Argentina to finish top of the group. Bulgaria qualified as one of the four best third placed teams.
