The shirts of the home team had "Mexico" printed on the back above their squad numbers just in case there was any doubt. Iraq appeared in the finals for the first time having qualified despite playing all their home games on neutral territory because of the war with Iran.

In the 35th minute Romero ran on to a through ball following a swift passing move from deep in Paraguay's defence and chipped the Iraqi goalkeeper to score the only goal of the game.

Flores put Mexico ahead in the third minute but his team could not capitalise on their lead and fell victim to a late equaliser scored by Romero.

Both Belgium's goals came in a three minute spell in the first half. It seemed they would cruise to victory after that but in the 59th minute Radhi put Iraq back in the game.

Belgium were ahead twice but each time Paraguay came back and the match finished all square, enough for Paraguay to finish in second place. Belgium later qualified as one of the four best third placed teams.
