A small group of English supporters had travelled to Rijeka in the hope of getting in but had to be content with watching from a nearby hillside. Their faint chanting could occasionally be heard in the otherwise eerily silent stadium.

English nerves were on edge when Kramarić crashed home the opening goal after dwelling on the ball in the penalty area for an age.
