FIFA World Cup 1982 Knock Out Stage

fifa world cup 1982 poster Because of the introduction of a second group round, the Knock Out stage consisted of just four matches contested exclusively by European teams. Germany's progression to the final was tainted by the blatant way in which the team had colluded with the Austrians to eliminate Algeria and a violent incident in their semi-final against France.

Rossi, the hero of Italy's victory over Brazil, did the business again with two goals that took Italy into the final. Poland wore slightly different shirts to those that appeared earlier in the tournament.

West Germany scored first but Platini equalised from a penalty in the 26th minute. With an hour played, Battiston reached a floated pass and flicked it over Schumacher, charging out from the German goal. The goalkeeper, already in the air, turned his body so that the French striker took the full impact, losing three teeth, cracking three ribs and damaging a vertebrae. The score was still 1-1 after 90 minutes but in extra time all hell broke loose. France stormed into a 3-1 lead after 98 minutes but then West Germany fought back with goals after 102 (Rummenigge) and 108 minutes (Fischer). The match went to penalties and sudden death: Bossis' kick was saved and Hrubesch scored the winner.

France went into the lead in the 13th minute but then conceded twice just before half-time. Straight from the kick off, Kupcewicz made it 3-1. Couriol pulled one back in the 72nd minute.

After a goalless first half in which Italy missed a penalty, Paolo Rossi scored in the 57th minute heading home from close range. Tardelli scored Italy's second from the edge of the area in the 69th minute. As West Germany pressed to get back in the match, Italy counter-attacked and Altobelli made it 3-0 with nine minutes to go. Breitner scored for West Germany two minutes later but it was now too late for even the Germans to recover. Italy had now equalled Brazil's record of three World Cup wins.
