FIFA World Cup 1974 Final Group Stage

fifa world cup 1974 posterThe new second group round happened to produce two matches that were in effect semi-finals. In Group A the Netherlands and Brazil met in the final round having both won their previous matches while Poland and West Germany found themselves in the same situation in Group B. Of course this also meant that there was nothing at stake in the other two final group matches.

Netherlands turned on the style, inspired by Cruyff who scored twice, to demolish Argentina. Krol and Rep scored their other goals. Curiously the Dutch socks were not a standard Adidas design and we must assume they were bought locally for this match.

West Germany 2 Netherlands 1

Olympiastadion, Munich (75,200)
7 July 1974

Before a German player had touched the ball, Cruyff was brought down in the penalty area and Neeskens scored from the resulting penalty. West Germany struggled to get back in the game but in the 25th minute they were awarded a penalty of their own, which Paul Breitner converted. For the last time, Gerd Müller scored the vital goal two minutes from half-time. (He would retire after the match.) In the second half Müller had a goal disallowed and a late appeal for a penalty was turned down after Hölzenbein went to ground in the Dutch penalty area. West Germany were the first nation to hold both the European and World Championships.
