Netherlands turned on the style, inspired by Cruyff who scored twice, to demolish Argentina. Krol and Rep scored their other goals. Curiously the Dutch socks were not a standard Adidas design and we must assume they were bought locally for this match.

Yugoslavia recovered from going 1-0 down to a 24th minute penalty converted by Deyna to level the scores two minutes before half-time. Lato scored Poland's winner with just under 30 minutes left.

Sweden were leading at half-time thanks to Ralf Edström. After the break the game burst into life: Overath and Bonhof both scored within the space of minute to give West Germany the lead but this was immediately cancelled out by Sandberg. Grabowski put the Germans ahead again in the 76th minute and with a minute to go, Uli Hoeneß made the game safe with a penalty.

Before a German player had touched the ball, Cruyff was brought down in the penalty area and Neeskens scored from the resulting penalty. West Germany struggled to get back in the game but in the 25th minute they were awarded a penalty of their own, which Paul Breitner converted. For the last time, Gerd Müller scored the vital goal two minutes from half-time. (He would retire after the match.) In the second half Müller had a goal disallowed and a late appeal for a penalty was turned down after Hölzenbein went to ground in the Dutch penalty area. West Germany were the first nation to hold both the European and World Championships.
