The first ever World Cup goal was scored by the French player Lucien Laurent in the 19th minute. At half-time they were 3-0 up and although Carreño pulled one back for Mexico with 20 minutes left, Maschinot made it 4-1 just before full-time.

Argentina
France
Argentina 1 France 0
Estadio Parque Central, Montevideo (18,000)
15 July 1930
The French goalkeeper, Alex Thépot had to leave the field with a fractured jaw and Laurent spent much of the match limping after a fierce tackle by Luis Monti. France held out until the 81st minute when Monti put Argentina into the lead. Three minutes later the referee blew for full-time when the French player, Langillier, was through on goal. Play resumed only after vigorous French protests.
Chile
Mexico
Chile 3 Mexico 0
Estadio Parque Central, Montevideo (7,000)
16 July 1930
Chile disposed of Mexico with some ease. Vidal scored twice in the third and 65th minute while the unfortunate Manuel Rosas put through his own goal six minutes into the second half.

Argentina
Chile
Argentina 3 Chile 1
Estadio Centenario, Montevideo (35,000)
22 July 1930
With both teams level on points the final game in Group 1 would be decisive (there was no mechanism in place to separate teams level on points at the top of the group). Stábile scored twice in a minute to give Argentina an early lead but Subiabre reduced the deficit almost immediately and with quarter of an hour played it was 2-1. It remained this way until nine minutes from time when Evaristo scored Argentina's third.
