1st FIFA World Championship for Women's Football 1991 Group A
The hosts were seeded in Group A along with the runners-up in the European Championship, Norway who had also won the prototype tournament organised by FIFA four years previously. Denmark had finished third in the Euros which had been played over the summer. New Zealand had finished level on points with Australia in the Oceania qualifiers but had qualified by virtue of their superior goal difference. The two teams had both won their home games 1-0 so it came down to how many goals the could put past the hapless Papua New Guinea side: 27 in the case of the New Zealanders compared to 20 for the Aussies.
