European Championship 1992 Final Stages

euro 92 logoThe political upheavals in eastern Europe had a dramatic impact on the 1992 tournament, which was held in four cities in Sweden. The Soviet Union team had qualified but that country had ceased to exist. Instead UEFA accepted a team from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) although the newly independent Baltic Republics did not send any players as their parent states declined to join this short-lived entity. Georgia was also not a member of the CIS but Kakhaber Tskhadadze was part of the squad. West Germany qualified but after the dissolution of the German Democratic Republic and reunification of the country, the team competed as Germany.

The Yugoslavian team had also qualified but UN sanctions imposed after the outbreak of civil war meant they were not permitted to take part. In their place, Denmark were invited to the party and to everyone's surprise, the gatecrashers ran off with the prize.

Attendances were modest but this was no longer of primary importance as broadcasting rights revenues were now of greater significance than ticket sales. UEFA required teams to wear squad numbers on the front of their shirts as well as on their shorts. This was the last tournament held under the existing format.

Graham Taylor's fancied England team struggled against the stand-ins from Denmark and could have lost had Jensen's strike not rebounded off the inside of the post and into the arms of Chris Woods in the closing minutes.

When Stuart Pearce's 25-yard drive bounced down off the cross bar without crossing the line it was clear this was not going to be England's day. Their direct tactics were simply not good enough to succeed at this level.

The team representing the former Soviet Union concentrated on containing Germany and took the lead in the 64th minute from a penalty. It seemed that their defensive tactics would pay off until Thomas Hässler popped up to equalise in the final minute of the match.

Scotland dominated the opening stages but the world champions absorbed their pressure and took the lead on 29 minutes. Effenberg doubled the lead two minutes into the second half and there was just no way back for Scotland, who were now eliminated.

Another defensive display by the CIS team was enough to grind out a goal-less draw and meant that, Scotland aside, the final round of matches would decide who progressed to the knock-out phase.

A brilliant free-kick by Thomas Hässler gave Germany an early lead, which they held until half-time. Riedle made it 2-0 after 59 minutes but Brolin put the Swedes back into the game with a penalty six minutes later. In a dramatic final flourish, Riedle scored again on 88 minutes and Sweden promptly scored straight from the restart.

Denmark took the lead in the 5th minute but midway through the first half, Bergkamp made it 1-1. Denmark were back in the lead ten minutes later and were well in control until Rijkaard equalised with four minutes to go. The Dutch pressed hard in extra time but Denmark held on and in the penalty shoot-out, Peter Schmeichel made the crucial save that took Denmark into the final.

No-one really rated Denmark's chances against the world champions. They had, after all, ridden their luck to reach the final and should prove no match for the accomplished German side. Germany started strongly but a goal against the run of play put Denmark into the lead. Germany now came at their opponents even harder but Schmeichel proved unbeatable and it was Denmark who scored with 12 minutes left to wrap up the game and complete an unlikely fairy-tale ending to the tournament they had not expected to take part in.
