The Premier and English Football League 2020 - 2021
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic Leagues One and Two voted to end their season early with final placings determined on the basis of points-per-game while the Championship and Premier League resumed on 17 June with regular fixtures being completed by 22 July. Play-offs were then held to determine the remaining promotion places in all four divisions. Two teams, Barrow and Harrogate Town were promoted from the National League but only one was relegated from League Two while three sides instead of four were relegated from League One to League Two thus levelling up the numbers following the expulsion of Bury in August 2019. Initially Stevenage were due to go down but after an appeal to an independent panel, by the EFL, a suspended points penalty was applied to Macclesfield Town who were relegated instead.
Because of the extended 2019-20 season the opening matches in the Premier League and Championship were put back to 12 September with the remaining divisions starting a week later.
